The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamal written by Michael Scott follows the story of two siblings who are twins in San Francisco. Sophie and Josh are normal fifteen year old teenagers - maybe moving more often than not as their parents are archaeologists. A little while into the book, readers learn that Sophie and Josh cross paths with Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel. Unknown to the modern human world, but famous in the mythical and magical world Scott creates within his pages.

This novel falls in the realm of Sci-Fi and Fantasy combined and is suitable for most readers, though the protagonists are teenagers so the plot is more geared towards YA (Young Adult) readers.

Scott does a wonderful job of writing this book in a very easy-to-comprehend way. The vocabulary is relatively simple and the plot is jam packed with different action and character growth. Scott also does a good job with introducing the quest like plot of the story as well as tackling the intricacies of sibling relationships. In all, it's a quick read and keeps the pages turning at every point.

Sophie and Josh are interesting characters and readers are left unsure of who to trust in this book (and series). Who do we, as readers, believe? Do we trust the narrators and their emotions or do we draw our own conclusions? I'm excited to complete the rest of the series to get a better idea of who our narrators are.
